Bitlocker – A Best Practice Guide

posted on January 8, 2007

Here is a best practice guide on WindowsSecurtiy.com on how to install and configure bitlocker. If you have a laptop and have Vista installed, it is not a bad idea to install BitLocker and get it configured and running. If your laptop was ever stolen you could breathe a little easier knowing that data was protected.

The second part to this guide will cover off configuring BitLocker from Active Directory and to manage BitLocker in terms of key recovery.

Update to Windows Vista Moving Domains

posted on January 7, 2007

Back in November I talked about trying to move my Windows Vista RC1 machine to a new domain and it didn’t go too well.

An update to this: I got talking to Pierre Roman who is a Technical Account Manager with Microsoft at the Vista Launch in Ottawa on December 7th. I knew him in his past life as a consultant with Quanara, as they did a lot of consulting work with the City of Kingston when I worked there. I was telling him about my mess moving my Vista box from the one domain to the other and the circumstances surrounding why. He mentioned to me that he thought there was a RC1 bug which caused this issue but that it was fixed since RTM.

I haven’t had time to revisit this issue since it first happened but I will try to get back to it at some point in the virtual environment with the RTM version and see if it is still an issue.

2007 time zone update for Microsoft Windows operating systems

posted on January 5, 2007

In case you haven’t noticed, the US has approved a plan to change DST to the second Sunday in March. The time also falls back the first Sunday in November. Older Microsoft operating systems will need an update and from what I see right now, there are updates for Windows XP SP2 and Windows Server 2003 and Windows Vista comes with support for the new standards built in. I can’t find any other support information on other Microsoft operating systems.  If I find information on the other Microsoft operating systems, I’ll pass it along.

The knowledge base article (Article ID 928388) can be found here and all the links for the downloads are contained within it.
