OWSUG October Meeting

posted on October 5, 2006

I was up at the October meeting of the Ottawa Windows Server User Group. Rick Claus did the presentation on Microsoft Small Business Server 2003 R2. He covered how small businesses could use it to provide access to the network resources for remote users and branch offices using the different tools in SBS. It was the warm up show for the I/O Tour in Ottawa today. I didn’t go to that, but it sounded like it would be good.

Some other things to note

  • Virtual PC 2007 goes into Beta on October 11th. Rick says he is already using it and it works well on top of Windows Vista.
  • Windows RC2 is coming up soon, I’ll place a link to the site.
  • Office Beta 2 Technical refresh is out. (Only available through Technet Plus or MSDN).  My friend Dave with the schoolboard tells me it works a lot better that Beta 2, basically better UI and more stable.

Try Before You Buy…..

posted on September 29, 2006

Graham Jones is a guest blogger on the Canadian IT Manager’s blog hosted on Technet and also the president of VANTUG. He wrote an article that explained how he had built himself a new computer after giving his son his old one and having some troubles installing Windows Vista. He had built an identical computer to the old one, but was having a terrible trouble with reboots. Here is the full article http://blogs.technet.com/cdnitmanagers/archive/2006/09/28/459624.aspx

I had a similar issue with Windows XP running Virtual PC. Every time I would open a virtual machine (didn’t matter the OS being virtualized), bam, the computer would reboot. I would disable the sound card in the bios and all would be fine, but no sound. It turned out the problem was a case of needing a new set of drivers.

Free Tools – Document Your Servers

posted on September 28, 2006

Enhansoft has very generously posted some scripts which allow you to document your servers. One is an SMS documentation script and the other is a MOM documentation, with more to come.

I will warn you, these scripts produce reports of over 100 pages.
