Presentation Overview

When done wrong, SharePoint can turn your public facing sites into a performance hog, which is impossible to manage.

Here we will cover some guidelines for a successful public website based on SharePoint:

  • Planning your SharePoint environment for a public facing website
  • Branding your SharePoint website; master pages; page layouts, style sheets, XSLT, item/group styles, etc.
  • Writing custom code to add more functionality to your SharePoint-based site: web parts, features, etc.
  • Customizing built-in SharePoint search functionality on your site
  • Securing your SharePoint-based website (protect backend servers, configure anonymous mode, use lockdown mode, etc.)
  • Implementing or preserving SEO practices in SharePoint
  • Tuning the performance of the SharePoint-based public site (managing page load, optimizing server response time, http compression, cache profiles, blob-cache, etc.)
