Deploying Windows XP with MDT
Posted on August 20, 2008, by Todd, under Business Desktop Deployment, Deployment, Windows Vista, Windows XP.
I’ve been working on trying to get some new machines deployed and some old machine’s refreshed with newer software for the past couple of days. I’ve been deploying both Vista and XP using MDT. I learned a few tricks that I want to pass along to everyone.

Group Policy Preferences
Posted on May 14, 2008, by Todd, under Group Policy, Windows Vista, Windows XP.
I have upgraded two of three domain controllers to Windows Server 2008 over the last couple months. The install went smooth and I will admit, Windows Server 2008 does seem like a rather nice OS. One of the new features of having a Windows Sever 2008 domain controller is the group policy preferences. Preferences will let you do things like create desktop shortcuts, printer mappings and map network drives along with many other things.

Windows XP Service Pack 3
Posted on January 31, 2008, by Todd, under Windows XP.
Service Pack 3 for Windows XP is coming soon. As with all new Service packs, take the time to look it over, do some testing with it in the lab before you roll it out

Windows XP Command Line Reference
Posted on November 5, 2007, by Todd, under Windows XP.
Islam Gomaa, my friend from the OWSUG in Ottawa, messaged me last night asking if I knew what the command was to fix the file system in Windows XP. I made a couple of guesses but the command he was looking for was SFC. He found a wonderful reference page on Microsoft’s site, so I told him I would pass it along.

Windows XP with Windows Deployment Services
Posted on February 16, 2007, by Todd, under Windows Vista, Windows XP.
I received a new computer yesterday for the museum. So I decided RIS was the way to go for imaging the computer. I have upgraded my RIS server to WDS and set it up in mixed mode. This was done some time back. I haven’t put Windows Vista as an image on it as we don’t really plan on upgrading to Vista corporately any time soon. We will probably upgrade to Vista when we roll out new computers in the next year or so. (Doesn’t mean my laptop won’t be upgraded sooner though). I went to put the standard Windows XP base image you make from the CD onto the new computer and it didn’t make it past the network boot, I got an error message about TFTP. Worked fine when RIS was there alone.

Windows Deployment Services
Posted on January 17, 2007, by Todd, under Hardware, Windows XP.
RIS has been replaced in Windows Longhorn and is now Windows Deployment Services. You can also install it on Windows 2003 Server where RIS is installed. You need a hotfix to install it. I spent some time looking for the hotfix, without much luck. Wasn’t looking hard but just in my spare time. I decided to focus a little bit on it today for an hour. What I found out was to get the hotfix you need to download the Windows Automated Installation Kit DVD image and the file is in the ISO. I downloaded the ISO, sure enough, there is the patch. I applied it to my existing RIS server and then upgraded the server to a Mixed mode server and that is where the server is at today. Nothing works right now, since I didn’t put a Windows Vista image but for now I just want to see if I can put up a Windows XP image. In my environment at the Court House, every computer is different, not one has the same hardware as another. Not a problem for Vista or Windows XP if I use BDD, but I want the images on the WDS server so what I plan to do is see if I can do a baremetal install of XP and WDS and be able to use it on other computers. I’ll keep you all advised.

2007 time zone update for Microsoft Windows operating systems
Posted on January 5, 2007, by Todd, under Windows Vista, Windows XP.
In case you haven’t noticed, the US has approved a plan to change DST to the second Sunday in March. The time also falls back the first Sunday in November. Older Microsoft operating systems will need an update and from what I see right now, there are updates for Windows XP SP2 and Windows Server 2003 and Windows Vista comes with support for the new standards built in. I can’t find any other support information on other Microsoft operating systems. If I find information on the other Microsoft operating systems, I’ll pass it along.

The Group Policy settings for Vista are available as a download from Microsoft’s website. It is in an Excel spreadsheet format and shows Windows Vista, XP, Server 2003 and 2000
