Setting up a KMS Server

Posted on March 2, 2010, by Todd, under Deployment, Windows.

Windows 7 Volume licensing basically has three ways to activate, MAK, MAK proxy and KMS. The first two require a key and the proxy needs to use the Volume Activation Management Tool. I won’t get into MAK today, its is somewhat straight forward. If you need information, check out the information on MAK at TechNet, http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd979805.aspx.

Windows 7 RC Released

Posted on May 7, 2009, by Todd, under Windows.

Just a reminder that Windows 7 RC has been released for download which you can get from the Windows 7 site. Two new features in Windows 7 RC which weren’t in Windows 7 Beta are Windows XP mode and Media Streaming. Dropped in Windows 7 RC is the Bluetooth Audio driver and Drag and Drop into Libraries. To upgrade from Beta to RC, you will need to backup your data prior as you can’t direct upgrade from Windows 7 Beta to Windows 7 RC. I will be following the clean install path and use Windows Easy Transfer to move my accounts, settings and data.

EnergizeIT: Install Fest for Windows 7 – Ottawa Event

Posted on April 9, 2009, by Todd, under Windows.

The EnergizeIT Windows 7 Install Fest ran in Ottawa and the session went great. There were 71 people out tonight with laptops to install Windows 7 onto their computers and a few more people from the OWSUG walking about and helping people with problems. Windows 7 was installed to computers as fresh installs, dual boots, upgrades and installs to virtual machines. We used both DVD media, USB sticks and ISO images. There were even two Macs in the crowd installing Windows 7 on their machines. (Who says you can’t make your Mac better?) One was using Boot Camp and one was using Parallels. Rick, Pierre and Christian had several demos, covering different Windows 7 scenarios. We saw how to boot from USB stick and how to enable Bitlocker to go. We learned about shims using the Application Compatibility Toolkit and new features in programs that have been with Windows since the Windows 3.1 days. Having been at the Windows Vista Install Fest in Mississauga a few years back, it was nice to be at the EnergizeIT: Install Fest for Windows 7. It was a great event and an evening well spent. Here are some photos from the event.

Posted on January 16, 2009, by Todd, under Windows.

Just getting up to date and I notice Microsoft has posted a page for the Media Center problems with the latest Windows 7 release. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/961367 is the page where you can find the information and the hotfix. It explains the problem and has the official Microsoft links to the download. Fixes play back and record issues along with the MP3 problem I spoke about before in my post .

Windows 7 – Jump Lists

Posted on January 13, 2009, by Todd, under Windows.

Windows Media Player JumpListI installed Windows 7 Beta on Saturday to my laptop. It had just finished installing and was I just starting to check it out when Tracey noticed I was done. She then asked to borrow the laptop and she logged on to the machine so she could surf the web. I had wanted to try out some of the new features in Windows 7 Beta but I guess that would have to wait. Tracey had important business, (FaceBook or something like that), so I would have to watch Saturday Night Live while Tracey played on the laptop.

Windows 7 Beta

Posted on January 9, 2009, by Todd, under Windows.

The Windows 7 Beta was to have been released to the general public and you were to get the beta through the Windows 7 page at Microsoft.com http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/. Having went to the page and looking around, I clicked on IT Pro. From there a page comes up and says basically that the interest in Windows 7 was so great that were experiencing some problems because of the heavy traffic. They will be adding more resources so that the download experience will be better and then will be posting the beta. Check out this link to the Windows 7 Team Blog for the latest information.
