New Blackberry Storm

Posted on October 22, 2008, by Todd, under Blackberry, iPod.

I was reading my blogs this evening and I notice Mark Evans writing about the phone wars between Apple and RIM. He feels RIM is losing its foothold to Apple and mentions of a user friendly web browser like the iPhone has. “While RIM has aggressively pushed into the pro-sumer market and enjoyed success with the Pearl, it has been puzzling that it hasn’t done much more to launch a user-friendly Web browser and a solid music/video player.” You can read his whole post at http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/MarkEvans/~3/428496182/

Probably the last to know this.

Posted on October 3, 2008, by Todd, under Blackberry.

I'm probably the last to know this but I discovered I could check my hotmail from my Blackberry remotely by using mobile.live.com. I had been trying to use www.hotmail.com but that didn't work so well. You can also use that site to check stocks, sports etc. Other tools I have installed are the typepd blog posting tool, google maps, google news, facebook app, the weather network app and newsgator go!. The typepad tool makes it handy to write a post remotly while out and about as I am doing now. The google maps tool is great for when you are lost and although my bb doesn't have the gps, the maps application is fairly accurate in calculating, especially in Ottawa and Toronto, but not so much in Napanee though (not enough cell towers). Google news, facebook and the weather network app are pretty self explanatory. Newsgator Go! i use to keeep up to date on the blogs I read when on the go. I use feeddemon on my desktop computer and use the synching service to stay current across multiple machines. These tools are the ones I use to keep up to date both online stuff and offline information when on the go.

The Strength of the Blackberry

Posted on September 25, 2008, by Todd, under Blackberry, Exchange Server, Microsoft, Web/Tech.

Mark Evans posted a bit about what he thought was the strength of the blackberry, which is its keyboard. While I agree with Mark that the keyboard is easy and makes popping of an email quick, I have seen my friends with iPhones do it just as quick as me. I also had to buy pointing sticks for some of the staff as they just couldn’t use the keyboard on their Blackberry, it was too difficult for them.  I personally feel the strength of the Blackberry is its corporate inroads and how easy it is to get up and running. Getting a Blackberry running in a corporate environment is as simple as downloading the Enterprise Server from Blackberry, installing it on a computer and then linking it to your messaging infrastructure. There is no inbound firewall ports to open which helps mitigate the risk to the environment and there was no security certificates needed to be purchased . While these things aren’t harder to do work wise, in some environments it creates more complexity as there might be different teams for the firewall versus the messaging teams.

Blackberry Time change

Posted on October 29, 2007, by Todd, under Blackberry.

blackberry beaver Blackberry Time changeI couldn’t understand why I was late for everything yesterday until last night around 5:00. Turns out my Blackberry, which I purchased from Bell over the summer didn’t recognize the time change or the fact it doesn’t change until next weekend. My first instict was to curse Bell but then I realized in the date/time option that the network time was correct. So it was the device’s fault, stupid me for assuming the device was good to go patched out of the box.
